ED GUNGOR | AUGUST 3, 2009 (NEW BOOK) WHAT BOTHERS ME MOST ABOUT CHRISTIANITY |
 |
My new book "What Bothers Me Most About Christianity" has been released in bookstores all across the nation. The reason I wrote this book is because I didn't want to ignore the fact that some things about Christianity are just plain messy. In recent years there have been lots of atheistic books that attack the Christian faith. I think some of their attacks need a response from the Christian community-but one that is both fresh and humble. In "What Bothers Me Most About Christianity" I try to do that. In this writing I explore the most difficult aspects of the Christian faith, including... Why doesn't God just show Himself? Why does a loving God allow evil in His world? If the Christian faith is so good, why are some Christians so bad? Why was God so harsh during Old Testament times? Why is the Christian faith so exclusive? I honestly believe that having faith does not demand intellectual suicide. There are reasonable responses to these difficult questions. This book will equip you to better represent your faith to everyone around you. Here's what a couple of Christian leaders have said after reading my book: "When I first heard the title, What Bothers Me Most About Christianity, I was a bit leery, because quite frankly, I am most grateful to be a Christian! But I was delighted to discover that Ed Gungor upholds Christianity while honestly addressing many of the misconceptions about the Christian faith. In a way that speaks to our post-modern culture, Ed Gungor takes these misconceptions, one by one, and systematically addresses them from a Christian perspective." -- Jerry Newcombe, D. Min. - TV Producer / Author "I love this book! It's a lot easier to give pat answers to questions people aren't asking than to wrestle honestly with the questions they are asking. Thank you, Ed, for wrestling with honest questions. I highly recommend it for people who wrestle and think!" -- Bob Roberts, Author, Glocalization: How Followers of Jesus Engage a Flat World It would be so helpful, and I would be so honored, if you would be willing to go to any one of our local bookstores to pick up a copy of "What Bothers Me Most About Christianity." The publishers are watching to see who will respond to this book and if you snag a copy, it would send a great message to them. If you get one, please let me know what you think after you have had a chance to jump in and read it! Thank you so much! Pastor Ed Gungor Click here to purchase this new book! |

| Saw you on TBN last night. You always challenge my husband and I with the truth of who Jesus is and how we are to respond to that. Love your comments regarding "God's gestures of grace" towards us. You referred to how we must wrestle with the truth that we matter to God and are part of His story. What if I am disappointed in myself and scared of the amount of influence I have in my family? What if "my influence" isn't positive? Obviously, I'm still wrestling... |

| For the past four years I have been asking myself some of these very same questions in your book. Seeing my son graduate from a "Bible" college this past May and walk away from it not believing in God anymore, certainly rocked my world as my son would say. He got a job in a local Barnes and Noble and I was walking around the store the other day and "just happened" to look down at a table and see your book, bought it and read it immediately. It has blessed me tremendously and truly believe God meant for it to be there for me that day. smile I just pray my son will read it also. Thank you Ed Gungor. |

| I found the book What Bothers Me Most About Christianity very refreshing. I too have wrestled with many of the questions that Ed raises in the book. I have struggled with literal interpretations of the bible and metaphorical or figurative interpretations. I think that this book can be very helpful, especially for seekers. It may offend some fundamantalists, but that may be a good thing. The book uncovers many "myths" that masquerade as truths. Thanks for teh insightful book! |

| Hey Jane,
Ed Gungor here...I love that you are honest enough to wrestle through these issues. Gnarly road to be sure, but I think God loves it when we actually use the brains he gave us!
I thought of a couple of quotes I read some time ago and thought you might enjoy them as well:
Presbyterian novelist Fredrerick Buechner wrote:
%u201CEvery morning you should wake up in your bed and ask youself: %u2018Can I believe it all again today?...At least five times out of ten the answer should be NO because the NO is as important as the YES, maybe more so.%u201D
Then there is Madeleine L.Engle who wrote:
%u201CSometimes I just know that I am going to come down with an attack of atheism again. It%u2019s like the flue. Spiritual flu, I call it. I get ready to endure three of four days of doubt and deep distance from God. Then through the grace of God, I find myself spiritually well again.%u201D
I applaud you for pushing into these ideas and pray that faith will win the day in you...that being said, sometimes that takes a while and distancing yourself from the noise of evangelicalism can often be a great blessing in disguise.
Grace to you...eg |

| I grew up in fundamentalist Christianity, graduated from a strong Christian college, served overseas and stateside as a missionary and pastor's wife, etc... yet in the last six years I have been seriously doubting the truth and authority of the Bible and the validity of my faith. In the last two years especially (since my youngest child was born still), I have been reading widely among liberal theists, deists, agnostics, and atheists -- M. Borg, S. Spong, S.M. Kidd, B. Russell, B. Ehrman, V. Stenger, M. Shermer, D. McGowan, D. Barker, C. Hitchens, and many more.
More than a month ago, I decided to leave Christianity behind completely. I told my husband (still a completely devoted evangelical Christian who serves in several ways in our growing local church) that I was an atheist. He was stunned and hurt, of course. Though he knew I'd been doubting and searching, he never imagined I could ever actually turn from God. Yet after his initial reaction, he chose to read and discuss some books with me. His willingness to hear and respect my thoughts, rather than pushing them aside as unimportant or simply heretical, sparked a desire in me to look at the Christian side of the argument one more time. But I wanted to find books that really addressed the crucial issues in an honest way, and I had never had any luck in finding anything like this in all my searching. The closest I'd come was Timothy Jones' _Misquoting Truth_ (in response to Bart Ehrman's _Misquoting Jesus_) and Ravi Zacharias' books, but they just weren't enough.
And then a few weeks ago, the very day I went looking online one last time, your book showed up and sounded like it might be just what I wanted. Our local B&N had it on the shelf (though it wasn't there a day earlier), and I bought it and read it that night. Since then I have been reading it aloud and discussing it, chapter by chapter, with my husband. I'm still working through things, and I don't know what my final choice will be. I'd like to think I will be able to make the leap of faith that is necessary to believe once more in God and salvation through Jesus when I reach the end of reason. If there's a chance of that happening, Ed, it's definitely because you had the guts to write this book. Thank you. |
